5 Essentials for your Beach Bag

It’s that time of year again, the weather’s heating up and summer’s got everyone buzzing! And yes, you’ve prepared yourself for the onslaught of “sun’s out, guns out” posts and can’t wait to get to the beach. Not much is needed to enjoy a beautiful day on the beach, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t always forget something at home that would make it just that little bit better. Well, not this year! Here are some tips to help you up your beach game this summer:

  1. Add a soundtrack to your beach day with some portable speakers. This will add that “I’m in movie” type vibe to your day! Make sure you bring your powerbank too, so that you don’t have to worry about your battery dying. While you’re at it, pop that phone into a water-resistant phone pouch! You know, safety first…and you’ll also be ready for any splash-proof photo-ops when they arise!
  1. Make sure your setup will be comfortable all day. An easy way to do this is to bring two towels: one to lie on and one to actually use. This way you don’t have to dry yourself with a sandy towel. Another thing you’ll never regret having is an umbrella. Sure, it’s a bit of a mission to carry it down from the car, but it’ll all be worth it when you need a little reprieve from that afternoon sun! Another must have is a pair of flip flops: this one is self-explanatory, unless you’re someone who enjoys burning the bottom of their feet on the way to the water!
  1. Haven’t you heard? SPF is in, so be sure to pack some decent sunscreen to avoid looking like a lobster after a long day at the beach! Hats are also a cool way to give yourself a much-needed break from those UV rays, especially if you’re on the move, or playing a game of touch rugby.  And don’t forget to pack your sunnies – there’s nothing worse than spending the day squinting at all your friends.
  1. Bring some extra entertainment as insurance. As I said before, it’s not difficult to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach, but it never hurts to have a backup plan in case boredom strikes. An easy fix is a good book or magazine to keep you entertained. If you’ve had enough reading for one year (thank you very much!), then bringing a rugby, or soccer ball, frisbee, or bats and ball would be perfect. If watersports are more your thing, a surfboard or bodyboard will definitely keep you busy for hours. And, if you want to stay on trend, an inflatable swan, or doughnut tube can add a different kind of fun to the water!
  1. Arguably the most important thing to take the beach (or anywhere, really) is FOOD. Bringing food from home will keep your beach days cheap, which means you’ll have money for other holiday activities too. So, don’t forget to pack a big water bottle to keep you hydrated through the day and some snacks to keep you going! Watermelon is recommended – it’s the perfect summer treat and also highly Instagram-able!
